Old Lady Tasered

We’ve all seen this by now, a 72 year-old woman pulled over for speeding and mouthing off to the cop.  So he arrests her, she resists, and he Tasers her.  Oh my, big burly cop, little old lady, and he can”t cuff her without using (possibly) lethal force?  Isn’t a Taser supposed to be a last resort before shooting someone?  He tops her by a foot and maybe 100 pounds, and he can’t cuff her?  Over a speeding ticket?  Did he go home that night feeling proud that he’d done his job to ‘protect and to serve’?  What a fuckin’ wimp.

People, where are we heading when we let them do this to us?  What if he’d just swallowed his manly pride and walked away?  She’d still get the ticket, justice would be served.  Was this necessary or was he just pissed because he didn’t get laid last night?  Maybe he has a problem with his mother.

If I tasered you and you died, I could be charged with murder.  If you didn’t, possibly attempted murder?  Assault, at least.

SS, Gestapo, KGB, County Mounties, what’s the dif?  Question is, who do they work for?

Weird Animals

These critters cause problems with us, such as getting away for a weekend, and what to do about the animals?  The cats can survive for a couple days with water, food and a litter box.  Skippy the dog?  Yeah, right.  Problem.

Anyway, we love ‘em and are waiting for them to die of old age.  Try as we IMG_3516might, the cats seem to avoid cars pretty well.

So, Skippy the Dog and Mo the Cat are inseparable, real buddies.  Sure they have their tiffs, but who doesn’t with their best friend?

Dogs hate cats, and vice-versa, right?  Not that simple.  Skippy thinks he’s Alpha around here (and the whole neighborhood)  after Angie and I.  Mo also thinks the same, except, being a cat, we’re all inconsequential.  Those two haven’t quite worked out who’s boss yet.

So Skippy chases the cats around when he feels like it and Mo has figured out that when Skippy is iIMG_3518n the yard on his rope, all Mo has to do is grab the rope and Skippy is stuck.  One cat fingernail on the rope is enough to stop Skippy in his tracks.   Woose dog!  It’s really weird.  Cracks us up.  We’re easily entertained.

The pictures pretty much say it all.  This was 15 minutes of dog tongue bath on a cat, and the cat loved it.  Go figure.

Why is it that a dog and cat can reach this point and we can’t?  We can’t get along with our neighbors, let alone other countries.  But these ‘dumb’ animals, natural enemies, can.  What the Hell is wrong with us?

This is for You, Ladies

porn for women  Though for the life of me, I don’t get it.  I cook, I clean house (when Angie lets me) but I never noticed her getting particularly turned on by it.  Dunno, women…

Crashing Chrysler Crushes Careers

Thchrysler01p25e good news is: The United Auto Workers are receiving 55% interest in the new Chrysler Corporation.  That gives employees a stake in their company’s success  The bad news is: They don’t want it!  Guess we know how much confidence they have in the motor company that they now control.  And how much confidence they have in being capable of building a decent, competitively priced automobile.

No, they’re going to sell the stock and put into their own retirement health care trust so that their members will be at least somewhat covered when the whole industry goes belly-up.

With a vote of confidence like that, anybody wanna buy a Chrysler?unemployed

Story here:  UAW Unloading Chrysler Stock.

And while we’re on the subject, guess what’s happening at the 100 year old Chrysler engine manufacturing plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin?  It’s moving to Mexico!  Let’s hear it for the bailout!  Yippee!  And for NAFTA!  Hurray!

Question:  If we actually do buy a new Chrysler, will we catch the flu?

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Even better news:  Only 601,000 new unemployment claims came in last week!  That 34,000 less than the week before!  Times they are a changin’.  Only 6,350,000 Americans out of work and collecting benefits now  (the ones not able to collect anything don’t count, they don’t show up on stats).  Things are definitely lookin’ up!

Bloomberg

In The Incredibly Stupid Arena…

miss c It’s still being bandied around the news, TV, etc.  A beauty queen ( well known for their brain power) answers a stupid question honestly and gets her guts ripped out.  By both sides.

Question:  What do you think about gay marriage?

Answer:  I think it’s great to live in a country where you can do it.  Personally, I believe that marriage is between a man and woman.

Oh my God.  She answered honestly according to her personal, religious and family beliefs, not by giving a politically correct answer.

Anti-gays hate her because she says it’s ok, pro-gays are pissed because she didn’t personally agree with it.

What?  We’re not allowed personal opinions anymore?  Is that part of the Patriot Act, or something?

And, hate to ask, why does anybody care what a (sorry) brainless beauty queen (with nice fake boobs according to Angie) says anyway?  Nobody even noticed that this contest happened until this made the big news.

Quick question:   Who won the contest?  Hah!  Gotcha!

That’s about it.  Just seems silly that such a big fuss is made over such a small thing.   Slow news week?

A Story

This is not a plea for pity.  This is an intensely personal story about a couple of ordinary, previously middle class folks who, like many others, have found themselves in a strange place.  It’s also about our society and how we look at things.  There is no intent to whine, complain, or blame here.  This is just how it is.

Angie and I both grew up in middle class working families, pretty ordinary.  Both of us have worked since our teens, paying taxes and being good citizens.  We both married, raised children, and were contributing members of society.  Angie mostly raised her boys alone after divorce, my ex and I lasted until the last one was out of the house.  That’s the background, pretty ordinary.

I used to have a concession stand on State Street Mall in Madison, on campus, selling Italian Beef sandwiches and such.  When our daughter, Kristy was born she joined me there, in a backpack.  Ex and I had decided that we wanted a full-time parent for our kids and, since ex was on career track (plus the fact that I had more mothering instinct in my little finger than she had in her entire body) it made sense that I be the one.  Besides, she made the big bucks.

When Kristi was about 2 years old son Jesse came along.  Kristi graduated to a playpen outside the stand, getting spoiled by 20,000 coeds, and Jesse went into the backpack.  When he moved to the playpen, Kristi was being babysat by other vendors in exchange for food.  Worked pretty well.  Then 2nd son Nathan came along.  Nope, sorry, this is getting too complicated, sold the stand.

I became a true Mr. Mom.  Got licensed and did home day care, plus bartending at night.  During this time , in another world, Angie was divorced and raising two kids and working her butt off.

The point is that we both were functioning members of society, doing what we should.  Remember that, there will be a quiz later.

My kids reached school age and I started driving handicap vans.  You know, driving disabled folks around.  Hours were flexible, I could be home when the kids were, do school things and so on.  Remember, ex was the major wage earner, I was child care provider.  Worked well.

Eventually I switched to driving cab, full time.  Kids grown, wife decided she didn’t want to be married.  I was devastated, nearly suicidal.  27 years.

In the settlement I got the house and mortgage.  Fine, ok, I don’t care.  Seemed like a good idea at the time.  Don’t care.

Flash forward.  I survived and actually came to realize that life could be good.  I felt good.  Met Angie, found the love I’d been seeking all my life.  Gave her the love she always deserved.  Life is very good.

Now, Angie and I both have health issues.  Hers prohibit her from working a regular job, mine have racked up tens of thousands of dollars in debt since we have no health insurance.  Even if we could afford it, everything would be pre-existing and not covered.  Basically, we’re screwed in that regard.

We have no doctor.  When our current prescriptions expire, we will not be able to get the drugs we need to stay alive (and which we cannot afford).  I had cancer surgery and cannot afford to do the required follow-ups to see if they got it all.

So, in a country of plenty, with CEO’s getting $20 million payoffs for destroying their company, Angie and I wait to see how long we’ll live.  Because we can’t afford a doctor.

Cracks in the system.  If there’s a crack, we fall through it.  No minor kids at home so no eligibility there.  Not old enough for Medicare.  Actually have a (small) income, so out of luck there.  There are programs where they’ll help fix up your house but it’s based on home value, not income.  Our house is assessed above the threshold, though we can’t manage to sell it anywhere near that.

Our property taxes are twice our minimum interest only mortgage payments, which is all we can afford to pay.  Obama’s rescue plan doesn’t help us because we’re not in the process of repossession.   We’d have to stop paying to qualify.  And, just for fun, the plan my ex set up states that if the bank even thinks that we might have a problem with payments, they can immediately call in the balance due or repossess.  Can’t even talk to the bank about refinancing.

There are more things we could talk about, but (if you’ve stayed long enough to get here) you should get the idea by now.

This isn’t really about us, it’s about how perfectly ordinary, hard-working Americans can find themselves looking for a cardboard box to live in because, playing by all the rules they were raised to follow, can still find themselves them in a big, steamy pile of shit.

We’re not looking for sympathy, we got ourselves exactly where we are now.  But, dammit!  The deck was stacked.  And there are many more people far worse off that we are.  We’ll get by, it’s not the future we envisioned, but we’ll survive.

But it’s just not right.  There are plenty of slackers out there that have never raised a finger on their own behalf, just feeding off the system, and it’s hard to feel a whole lot of compassion for them.  But when folks that have done it right, tried hard, been productive and a beneficial part of their community are tossed onto the trash heap because rich people have stuffed their pockets, it’s just wrong.

Not looking for a handout, just maybe a helping hand.  All those billions going to the people that caused the problem, not a nickel going to the folks hurt by it, and paying for it.

A ‘Must See’ : Zeitgeist

zeitZeitgeist.  (def.: the spirit of the time; the spirit characteristic of an age or generation)

Son Jim brought this to us, amazing. OK, haven’t researched everything in it for accuracy yet, and is obviously oriented to make a point, but it’s pretty damn good anyway.

In a nutshell, it ties history, myth, religion, politics, finance, war, the whole mess together.  It’s like something you might find on the History Channel, but more.  Much more.

It’s an insane, impossible, logical, possible view of the world we live in.

Since we always try to make things easy for you, you can even watch all two hours of it right here, for free!  Starts kinda slow and I kept finding myself saying Duh!, so?  but gains momentum and has a certain black humor running through it, though it deals with some very serious stuff.  Still, we laughed a lot, for a while.  Then we stopped laughing.

Anyway, give it a shot.  If you stick with it I think you’ll enjoy it or, at the very least get educated a little (painlessly) and maybe stir up a few brain cells.

If you’re a Liberal, it’ll scare you.  If you’re a true conservative, like my father and Eisenhower were, it’ll scare the hell out of you.

OK, it’s a conspiracy sort of thing, but isn’t complete bullshit.  In this day and age you don’t know what to believe, and this movie won’t help you a bit.

Failed Hopes, New Hopes

I talked to a kid today, college kid, and his assessement of MY generation is that that maybe, just maybe, what we accomplished most is to breed a generation of people that might actually DO something good with the mess that we failed to fix.

He may be right.

Of course, we felt the same way.

For all or our ideals, those among us who were destined for power continued the path of those that preceded them.  Our generation let us down.   Bill Clinton, such a shame.

Now we have The Obama.  We’ll see.

I fear this kid is wrong.  Those who seek the path to power are the the LAST people we want to wield it..  Unfortunately, they do.

And there’s no way out.

Tragedy

“When a man does something he’s ashamed of, he always says it’s his duty”

I recently read a sad story about an emotionally disturbed man in New York, suicidal, who’s apartment was surrounded by police.  He fled through a window to the fire escape, couldn’t go up, couldn’t go down.  Cop tactical team had him pinned.

A police lieutenant ordered that he be tasered.  He was, and fell to his death.  If that’s not bad enough, the lieutenant, disgraced and mired in guilt, took his own life.

Our Civil War.  Civil?  What’s ‘civil’ about nearly 700,000 countrymen killing each other?  Over 50,000 at Gettysburg alone.  In a few days.

1985 Philadelphia:  police bomb some radicals, destroy a city block and kill 5 children and 6 adults.

Just a few examples.  How many more, larger and smaller?  And why?

We have a war going on right now in the Middle East, for questionable reasons.  We’ve had questionable wars in the past.

On a daily basis we see police storming a house and killing someone, or being killed.  What if we just…waited.

What’s the hurry, sometimes?  Leave ‘em there, don’t let them out, cut the power and water.  They’ll come out sometime.  We don’t always need a SWAT team.

Why did that poor man have to be tasered and killed to prevent his possible suicide?  What was the hurry?  He was no threat.  Just a bother to be dealt with.  So he was killed.

Why did 700,000 people have to die in the Civil War?  Could we have not discussed the situation a bit more, recognized the trends of the future and worked things out at a cheaper price?  Maybe trade a few more years of slavery for a transition to a different economic solution, sans nearly a million dead and a catastrophic aftermath?  With the awful future than followed?  How much was it worth to go to war!  What was the gain?  And who gained?   The dead?  The slaves who remain to this day economic and social slaves?  Who gained?

They did.  Those who profited from the chaos of war and it’s aftermath.  No one else.  No one.

What was the hurry in Philadelphia?  They weren’t going anywhere, they had no ability to cause harm.  They’d get hungry, or cold, sooner or later.  But no, drop a bomb.  Kill them and their kids, show your power, please the powers that be.  Show who’s boss.

Was the price worth it?  And worth it to whom?

Shall we even mention the mess at Waco, Texas?  Where the government murdered 76 Americans because their lifestyle was ‘unacceptable’?

“Government is that entity which reserves the right for itself to kill those who disagree with it”.  Sweet.

Of course, when an aggressor attacks, something must be done.  But how many times have we seen situations both local and international when impatience rules the day.  Diplomacy, compromise, understanding are given up for the sake of expediency or ambition.  Or personal gain.

Mercedes, Boeing, Mitsubishi, Rockefeller. Kennedy, Bush, Chaney.  Etc.  Oh, and many ‘etc.’  Not you, not me, them.

The ‘them’ that control all.

Sacrifice the masses, name a cause, invoke God, create a demon to slay.  Simply for expediency.  Or power, politics, profit.

Do you particularly want to kill somebody?  Do you really hate some nationality or ethnic group enough to want to kill them and their children?  Are they really bothering you?  Cannot most people get along if we can agree to not bother each other?

I may covet my neighbor’s possessions, but I don’t want to kill him to get them.  And if I were willing to do that, wouldn’t it make more sense for him to share than die?  Situation reversed, would it not make sense for me to share rather than to fight and die to keep that which I won’t have if I’m dead?

Is that not the essence of civilization?  Cooperation for mutual benefit?  To avoid conflict?

Face it:  They cause the problems.  They who have no patience.  They who crave power or wealth.  They…who rule.  The little folks just want to live and let live, it’s they who have grander ideas and use us to achieve them.  And we let them.  And we feed  them our children’s lives, and our own, so that they might attain their goals.

Jeez, I sound like a Bolshevik.  My Dad, somewhat to the Right of Barry Goldwater, must be rolling in his ashes…

This posting started out as a simple pissed off rant about how police tend to rush situations and cause bad endings, but evolved a bit.  Rants tend to do that.

But do you see the connection between storming a house to remove a bad guy instead of simply starving him out, and invading a nation instead of essentially doing the same?  Or negotiating, more and more?  There must often be some way to work things out without slaughter, if the effort is made. What if enough effort is made to work things out and failing that, and it’s a big if, what if people are unwilling to follow the bidding of their masters.  ‘What if they had a war and nobody came?’

new world order   Attack my house and I’ll fight you.  Threaten Enron and, well, hmm.  Let me think about it…

I also see a connection to the criticism by the Right of The Obama’s radical idea of actually talking to our adversaries instead of simply trying to bomb them to oblivion.

I’m not stupid, I realize that you simply can’t reason with some people, for all the above reasons.  Appeasement is not the answer.  But maybe, just maybe, talking a bit, finding out just what the hell is their problem is might be useful.  And maybe we can work things out.

If not, we can always bomb them into the Stone Age.  Hell, it worked in Korea and Vietnam and Afghanistan and Iraq, right?  There’s certainly no reason to change the way we’ve been killing each other for all of Human history.  It’s worked just fine so far.

Guess this qualifies as a rant, huh?

Hope

Just a few minutes ago we watched Jennifer Hudson sing the National Anthem at the Super bowl.  Beautiful.  When she came to the part about the flag still waving after the long battle, and what that meant, I couldn’t help but think about the promise that this new administration offers after a long battle with those that would destroy the American way of life.

Hope.  No promises, but as Spring follows Winter, a promise of something better.

Let’s hope, put aside our differences, and try for a better America.  A better world.
